Biography:
Mayumi was born in Japan and grew up there for most of her life, with a black mother and Japanese father. Even as a child she was always very smiley and energetic, loving to be at the center of activity and spend time with others. Her parents loved her very much and she always felt very safe with them.
Growing up Mayumi definitely experienced issues with bullying and exclusion at school. She was whispered about by classmates - the dark one, the one who looked "foreign." She continually dealt with being picked last for everything, peers treating her like she was "dirty," and struggling to form friendships due to people wanting to stay away from her.
She tried, she really did. Despite feeling unwanted, she did everything she could to be a positive person and someone that was nice to be around. However, sometimes it felt like her parents were her only solace. This got a bit better in high school - she became known for befriending people who seemed like outcasts or struggled to fit in, and extending a loving hand to everyone finally earned her close friendships. However, she continued to struggle with internalized racism from years before and would get very upset towards any kind of discrimination.
Mayumi was 17 when her parents moved to the USA due to work opportunities. This was rather rough on her - she had already struggled so hard with building friendships, and now she would have to start all over. This was a motivator behind her getting into harajuku fashion, in a sense. It comforted her to participate in something from her home country, and reflected her want to be something bright and happy for those around her.
Luckily, things went a bit easier friendship-wise at her new home. Her parents homeschooling for her last year of high school, so she participated in as many community activities as she could in order to meet lots of people even when her English wasn't complete. People love her willingness to learn and help, and she started to connect with people who shared her interests and love for others.
Things were looking up when she went to college - it seemed so far that maybe she'd be able to live a life she loved. However, everything changed when a certain computer virus made its way onto her phone, meaning a completely new journey for her to go on.
